E. Jean Moyer

March 20, 1938 — April 2, 2022

Esther Jean Moyer, 84, a devoted follower and faithful servant of Jesus, saw her Savior and Lord face to face on April 2, 2022, surrounded by her family. Jean was born on March 20, 1938, to Grant and Esther Styer of Telford, PA. She was the firstborn trailblazer for her two younger sisters, an excellent student, and a tough act to follow. She began piano lessons at age 9. In her teens, she learned to play Hawaiian guitar under the direction of Joe Clemmer and traveled with the Musical Messengers. After graduating from Pennridge High School in 1956, she completed a one-year secretarial course at Lansdale School of Business. Sitting on a swing in the family backyard, Jean met Harleigh when he drove in the lane to meet her for the first time. They were drawn to each other's differences and shared similarities. The two married on July 11, 1959, both at the age of 21. They settled in Akron, PA so that Harleigh could fulfill his volunteer service commitment at Mennonite Central Committee. The couple were blessed with 7 children in the span of 14 years. As their family grew, they relocated from Akron to Ephrata. The modest home on West Main Street served their family well. Jean made daily family suppers around the table a priority. The lengthy family conversations following meals were formative and are treasured by her children. Jean enjoyed family and was tough-minded. She purposed in her heart to do what had to be done with great care and hard work. Jean's steady, humble spirit sacrificed much for her husband and children. She enjoyed preparing special surprises for the family and for individuals. Those well-planned surprises brought generous laughter and joyful exchange, much to Mom's delight. She kept an orderly, yet comfortable home, establishing efficient family routines and expectations. Her children have benefited and carried them into their homes. She went above and beyond to meet the needs of their growing family. Jean and Harleigh's commitment to Christian education for their children required sacrifice. Jean assisted by driving a school bus for 7 years and serving as church secretary for 17 years. Jean and Harleigh have been active members of Grace Fellowship Church in Ephrata together for 60 years. The family served the church as custodians, each member with a specific assignment every Friday night. Jean was happy to serve in the shadows with little attention. To the church family, her easygoing kindness to others and her hearty laugh are fondly remembered. As her children left the home for college, Mom communicated with each one through weekly hand-written letters which became weekly emails over time. She celebrated the milestones and accomplishments of her children, their spouses and eventually her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. This included road trips for graduations, weddings or birthdays. Family gatherings included peanut scrambles, playing games, and so much laughter. Preparing special treats for any grandchild who came to visit was among her greatest joys. "Grandma" remembered every birthday with a card. She arranged calls to each family member on their special day, ending each call with prayer. After the last child left home, she enjoyed new hobbies including delivering newspapers and shopping early morning garage sales in town. In 2016, Jean and Harleigh moved into a smaller home in Stevens, PA. Jean continued to be passionate about prayer and missions. She served on the missions committee for years, stayed connected diligently with missionaries, and prayed for their needs often. Jean was also famous for her baking skills, offering her homemade delicacies at church gatherings or anyone in their home. In recent years, Jean won blue ribbons for her shoo-fly pie at several area fairs. Jean lived in a sacrificial way towards others. Faithful. Steady. Dependable. Caring. Prayerful. Her deep faith in Jesus to love and care for those she loved near and far is a testimony to all of us. May her quiet, gentle way of loving others make a lasting impact on how we serve and care for others. In addition to her husband, Jean is survived by seven children, Karen Norton (Clifford) of Machiasport, ME, Melody Talley (John D. III) of Sandown, NH, Ferrill Moyer (Samantha) of Red Lion, PA, Joy Stauffer (Terry) of Fort Mill, SC, Jewel Chapman (Jonathan) of Winder, GA, Durrell Moyer (Heidi) of New Holland, PA, and Crystal Daspit (Douglas) of New Orleans, LA; 23 grandchildren, Rebecca (Nicolas) Poisson, Amanda (Ben) Landwehr, Nathaniel (Naomi) Norton, Karyssa Norton, Caleb Norton, Timothy (Whitney) Talley, Tiffany (Kenneth) Davis, Bryce Moyer, Brady Moyer, DelRoy Stauffer, Jared Stauffer, Terrell (Laurel) Stauffer, Cheree Stauffer, Joanne Chapman, Janet Chapman, Brock (Hannah) Moyer, Benton Moyer, Blaize Moyer, Brielle Moyer, Bryn Moyer, Samuel Daspit, Zachary Daspit, and Elijah Daspit; ten great-grandchildren, Kaylee-Anne, Jayden, Tyler, Rylie, Katerina, Emma-Lynn, Jackson, Lainey, Tyde, and Marcellus; and two sisters, Marlene Gilman (Harry) of Flagler Beach, FL, and Ruth Buch (David) of Greenville, SC.
