John Smaltz

John A. Smaltz, age 79, of East Cocalico Township, Denver, Lancaster County, PA, died Monday, December 17, 2012, in the Health Care Center of Masonic Village, Elizabethtown, PA. Born in Hazelton, Luzerne County, he was a son of the late Harold A. and Charlotte E. (Hughes) Smaltz. He was a 1951 graduate of Hughestown High School and 1957 graduate of Bloomsburg University. John found his teaching home for 35 years at Cocalico High School, Denver, where he taught science, served as department head, junior class advisor, and supervised sound, sets & lighting at school productions, football games and band events. John was an Army veteran, member of Ephrata Lodge #665 F&AM, and cherished his grandchildren. Surviving is his wife of 55 years, Rita J. (Treese) Smaltz; son, Jay A. (Roberta Showalter) Smaltz, Denver; daughter, Amy J. (Brad) Knaus, Lancaster; grandchildren, Joshua A, Abagail R., Patrick T., Sarah E. and Rachel M.; sister, Elizabeth C. Smaltz, and nephew, James E. Smaltz, both Exton. John"s viewing will be Thursday, December 20, 2012, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm from Good Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, Reamstown, with services beginning at 7:30 pm. The Rev. Glenn A. Beard, Jr. will officiate. Private inurnment will be in Laurel Cemetery, White Haven, Luzerne County, PA. Rather than flowers, contributions may be sent to Masonic Village, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown, PA 17022.
