Catherine Youndt

Catherine Mae Youndt passed away peacefully at home on March 16, 2013, at age 93. Catherine"s life was deeply rooted in Lancaster County. She grew up as Catherine Good, on the Bowmansville farm that had been in her family since the early 1700"s. In the tradition of her day, she attended a two room schoolhouse until eighth grade and worked on the farm alongside her parents, Peter S. and Carrie M. (Redcay) Good, three brothers and two sisters. Prior to World War II she left the farm to work at a local silk factory and stayed on to produce silk parachutes for our airborne forces, but she never strayed far from home. In 1947 she married Robert Youndt of Fivepointville. Their wedding photo, still hanging over her bed, shows a strikingly handsome couple. For the next fifty-seven years, until his death in 2004, they were inseparable. Together, Catherine and Robert became pillars of their community. The family business, Youndt Brothers Meats, was well respected throughout the area. In the early years of their marriage, and again when their children were grown, Catherine worked side by side with Robert at farmer"s markets, but she particularly rejoiced in her role as wife and mother, striving for perfection in all she did. To her daughters, Lorraine and Betty, she was the ideal mother whose hands always reached out to hold them up but never to hold them back. Her support, encouragement and pride in their achievements fostered a generational leap from one and two room schoolhouses to university and post graduate degrees. Following Robert"s death, Catherine moved to Garden Spot Village, where she continued to shine. At 93 she would bring morning coffee and share newspapers with less mobile neighbors. She would welcome visiting family with a freshly baked pie. Her family continued to bring her joy and continued to receive her undying affection and generosity. She enjoyed life and had no fear of death, seeing it as the end of a well-done journey that would bring her back to Robert"s side, where she shall now be. Catherine"s memory will live on in her daughter"s, Lorraine, wife of Howard S. Veisz, Rye, NY and Betty Youndt-Whiting, wife of David Whiting, Laguna Beach, CA, four grandchildren, great granddaughter, and brother Harold R., husband of Barbara (Smith) Good, Fivepointville. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Harvey and Ralph, and two sisters, Anna Bixler and Myrle Good. A closed casket visitation will be held Thursday, March 21, from 1-2 PM at Peace United Church of Christ, 37 E. Swartzville Rd., Denver, PA 17517, with the funeral service at 2 PM. Rev. William E. Hoch will officiate. Burial will follow in Muddy Creek Cemetery, Swartzville. Rather than flowers, contributions to her church (address above) or Garden Spot Village Benevolent Fund, 433 S.
