Edward J. Howey

Edward J. Howey, 97, a long-time Lancaster County resident, passed away Saturday, March 10, 2018 at Brethren Village, Lancaster, PA with his family by his side. Born January 12, 1921 in Scranton, PA, he was the son of Richard J. and Irene (Ledvak) Howey. A WWII Veteran and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of The Pennsylvania State University, Mr. Howey began his career with AMF Inc. in Boston. He returned to this area in 1964 as Vice President of Engineering for the York Division of AMF until 1970. From 1970 to 1976 he served as Engineering Vice President at the American Seating Company in Grand Rapids, MI then Starcraft, Inc. in Goshen, IN. He returned to Lancaster County in 1976 when he was named President of the Trojan Yacht Company, a local division of Whittaker Corporation of Los Angeles. In 1979, upon being named Group Executive and Corporate Vice President, Mr. Howey established the headquarters for Whittaker's Metals Group here in Lancaster. In this position he directed the operations of companies in Oregon, Texas, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania until his retirement in 1983. Following retirement, he embarked on a second career that reflected his long-time interest in fly fishing. A past member of the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writer's Association, his articles and photographs appeared in many national publications devoted to outdoor activities. Mr. Howey was predeceased by his wife Margaret Irene (Stevenson), his daughter Pamela Ann de Bruijn and sister Elizabeth Snow of Hebron, OH. He is survived by his daughter Carole H. Walt of Greenwich, CT, son Richard L. (Margaret) Howey of Grand Rapids, MI, and son-in-law Hans de Bruijn of Lancaster. Surviving siblings are Irene Wood of Wilmington, DE, Jeanette (Donald) Murphy of Camp Hill, and brother Richard T. Howey of Asheville, NC. Mr. Howey had five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and was dearly loved by all. Graveside services will be held Friday, May 25, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Conestoga Memorial Park in Lancaster, PA.
