Melvin Burkhart

Melvin E. Burkhart, age 84, of Akron Borough, Lancaster County, PA, died Wednesday, March 20, 2013, in Ephrata Manor, Ephrata, PA. Born in Lancaster, PA, a son of the late Jacob and Stella (Coldren) Burkhart, he was the husband of Dorothy "Dottie" H. (Snader) Burkhart for 63 years. Melvin was a member of Muddy Creek Evangelical Lutheran Church, Swartzville, PA, where he served on church council. He was a Korean War Army Corporal and worked for Trojan Yacht and retired in 1994 from Red Rose Interiors, both Lancaster. An Ephrata Lodge #665 Free & Accepted Masons member, he was also in Rajah Temple Shrine, Reading; Reading Consistory; Lancaster Lodge of Perfection and volunteered transporting children for treatment at Shriners Hospital. Mel cherished family times, especially supporting sports events and fishing with his grandchildren, often in the mountains of Potter & Lycoming counties. Surviving in addition to his wife is a daughter, Linda, wife of Lee Gerhart, Denver, PA; sons, Kirby, husband of Sheila (Stricker) Burkhart, Ephrata, PA; and Scott husband of Jan (Brandt) Burkhart, Denver, PA; grandchildren, Justin, Mandy, Chrystal, Jim, Josh, Melissa, Ashley, Travis, Kirsten, Kortni great-grandchildren, Payton and a brother, Warren Burkhart, Akron. A sister, Helen, predeceased him. Melvin's viewing will be held pn Monday, March 25, 2013, from 10-11 AM at Muddy Creek Lutheran Church, 11 S. Muddy Creek Rd., Denver, PA 17517, with the funeral service at 11 AM. Rev. Robert A. Kramer will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in Muddy Creek Cemetery. Rather than flowers, contributions may be sent to Shriners Hospital for Children, 3531 N. Broad St., Philadelphia, PA 19140.
