Norine Helen Mountcastle, daughter of the late Frank and Norine Hurite, of Latrobe, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at the age of 80 on Tuesday, January 29, 2019. She was also predeceased by her sister, Mary Ann Hurite, and granddaughter, Caitlin Elizabeth Shaeffer. Her husband, Charles of Elverson, Pennsylvania and a brother, Dr. Francis G. Hurite and his wife, Gilda, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, survive her. She is also survived by four children: Elizabeth Ann (Scott) Shaeffer of Harrisburg; Charles Bassett (Charlotte) Mountcastle of Douglasville; Mary Helen (Scott Blanchard) Mountcastle of Reading; and Brooks (Becky Thoroughgood) Mountcastle of Harrisburg. During her life, she was fortunate to experience the joy and love of 8 grandchildren. Born on August 6, 1938 in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Norine was a 1960 graduate of Georgetown School of Nursing in Washington, DC. Norine loved helping people and her compassion for others was demonstrated in her personal and professional life. She spent her early nursing career working for Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After raising four children, she returned to caring for people professionally working for United Cerebral Palsy, Embreeville State Hospital, and the Pennsylvania Department of Health from which she retired. She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, West Brandywine, PA. Norine enjoyed traveling and taking cruises with her husband and family. She took special delight in spending time with the grandchildren and her many friends. For nearly 35 years, Norine spent a week each summer with her family in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, an activity that she cherished. Norine had a special fondness and appreciation for East Nantmeal Township, Chester County, where she lived for 46 years until her passing. Her hobbies included: gardening, watching hummingbirds outside her dining room window, hosting dinner parties, cooking and baking, and listening to music. She loved penguins and displayed them throughout her home. In 1998, she saw penguins up close and personal when she and her husband cruised to Antarctica. The family wishes to thank Home Helpers, Main Line Hospice, and all of the doctors who showed great care, compassion, and professionalism to Norine and her family as she battled Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, February 2 at St. Peter Catholic Church, 2835 Manor Rd., West Brandywine, PA at 12 p.m. The family will receive friends at church from 11am to 12p.m. Interment in All Souls Cemetery, Coatesville will follow.
