Suzanne C. Lewis

February 23, 1927 — May 14, 2023

It is with great sadness that the family of Suzanne “Sue” Knox Lewis, of Ephrata PA and formerly of Philadelphia and Nesquehoning, PA, shares the passing of Sue on Sunday, May 14, 2023, while surrounded by her family, at Fairmount nursing home in Ephrata.

Sue was born February 23, 1927, in Nesquehoning, PA, daughter of the late John and Mary Bonner Knox. She was the loving wife of the late Joseph J. Lewis, Sr., with whom she shared 64 years of marriage before his passing on October 21, 2019.

Sue attended Nesquehoning High School before continuing her education at Palmerton Hospital, becoming a nurse. She worked at Philadelphia VA Medical Center and Nazareth Hospital in Philadelphia.

Sue and Joe resided in Philadelphia for 36 years while raising a family before moving to Ephrata in 1991 upon their retirement. They were both active members of the Ephrata community including Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church. They both quickly adjusted to the relaxed pace of Lancaster County life and enjoyed every aspect of the close-knit community of Ephrata that became the source of many close friends. Sue was known to have an uncanny ability to retain important facts about everyone she met and treasured spending time with family and her grandchildren.

She will be lovingly remembered by her four children: Joseph J. Lewis Jr. (Pam) of Cazenovia, NY, Mary Agnes Lewis Kuhn (Paul) of Malvern, PA, James Lewis (Dana) of Lancaster, David Lewis (Janine) of Downingtown, 12 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, Sue was preceded in death by nine siblings, James Knox, Mary Knox Cannon, Eugene Knox, Sarah Knox Breslin, Peggy Knox Gallagher, John “Kay” Knox, Cletus Knox, Bernard Knox, and Patrick Knox.

Our family would like to recognize and thank the faithful caregivers of Fairmount Homes who provided excellent care and support for Sue over the past year.

A celebration of Suzanne’s life will be held on Tuesday, May 23rd at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church, 320 Church Avenue Ephrata PA 17522. Visitation at 10 am followed by mass at 11 am.
