Walter ‘Bud’ B. Hughes Jr., age 78, of Ephrata, passed away at the WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital on Sunday, September 17, 2023. Born in Phoenixville, a son of the late Walter B. Hughes Sr. and Irene E. (Fulmer) Hughes, Walt was the loving husband of Jessie N. (O’Neal) Hughes until her passing in 2011.
Walt graduated from Owen J. Roberts High School, class of 1964. Walt worked as a mail handler for Sperry New Holland and delivered mail between the different branches. As a young man, cruising around his hometown, Walt met his bride and married Jessie in 1970. The couple honeymooned in Ocean City, NJ, which later became the location for many family vacations. Walt’s family always knew when he had a witty comment or joke to tell as his laughter bubbled up before his joke could be told. Walt loved watching western movies, cop shows like NCIS and Law & Order, The Three Stooges, and Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner. But most of all, Walt absolutely loved coffee! Filling his social outings with conversation, laughter, and a regular hot black cup of coffee. He enjoyed his roles as ‘dad’ and ‘pappy’. His wit and charm will forever be missed.
Walter ‘Bud’ B. Hughes Jr. is survived by two children, Mona I. (Bradley) Murphy of Ephrata, Brian B. (Heather) Hughes; four grandchildren, Leann Murphy, Lindsay Murphy, Braden Murphy, Carissa Murphy; three siblings, Robert Hughes, David Hughes Sr., Nancy Melis; and one aunt, Janice Fulmer.
