William Harting

April 22, 1926 — December 5, 2013

William H. "Bill" Harting, age 87, of East Cocalico Township, Denver, Lancaster County, PA, died at home on Thursday, December 5, 2013. Born in Adamstown, Lancaster County, PA, a son of the late Phares G. and Sadie R. (Glass) Harting, Sr., he was the husband of Margaret L. (Demming) Harting for 58 years. A 1944 Shillington High School graduate, Bill played on their only undefeated football team. He attended Albright College and worked 47 years for Bollman Hat Company, Adamstown, as manager and purchasing agent. Bill served occupation duty in the US army following WWII. Active in leadership at Muddy Creek Reformed Church, he was instrumental in the formation of Peace United Church of Christ, Swartzville, singing in their choirs for 70 years. Past president and Melvin Jones Fellow award recipient with East Cocalico Lions Club, Reamstown, he served on District 14-D Council for 20 years, received 4 International Presidential Certificates of Appreciation, and started the first Leo Clubs in the district. He received the Silver Beaver Award while Assistant District Commissioner of the Boy Scouts of America and also served as leader of Troop 60, Reamstown; served on East Cocalico Township Water & Sewer Authority for 10 years; was awarded Citizen of the Year by Cocalico Jaycees; he and Margaret were mentors with the Juvenile Probation & Parole Program; hosts with the Lions" International Youth Exchange Program; traveled throughout the United States and 53 other countries; and were members of Twin Rose Good Sam Club Campers. He was supportive of his grandchildren"s activities, and was known as "Iron Man" by his golfing buddies. Also surviving are his children, Craig (Dawn) Harting, Muncy Valley, PA; and Lori (Alan) Parasky, Doylestown, PA; grandchildren, Joshua, Deryk, Tyler, Connor, Olivia, Rachel & Alexander; great-grandson, Macson; and brothers, Rev. Robert Harting, Reinholds; Phares (Ann) Harting, Jr., and Thomas (Liz) Harting, both Lancaster; and Philip (Carolyn) Harting, Adamstown. A brother, Carl, predeceased him. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 11, 2013, at 10:00 AM, from Peace United Church of Christ, 37 East Swartzville Road, Denver, PA 17517, with his pastor, The Reverend William E. Hoch, officiating. Viewings will be on Tuesday, December 10, 2013, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM from Good Funeral Home, Reamstown, and on Wednesday from 9:00 to 10:00 AM at the church. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Adamstown, PA. Rather than flowers, please remember Bill with contributions to his church, Peace UCC, 37 E. Swartzville Rd., Denver, PA 17517.
